Who else is growing a stache? A flavor savor? An upper lip cattepillar? There is a tradition behind it:

I've been trying to get Mustache Monday going for a while. No takers.

The weather sq I'm working for here is doing a Mustache March fundraiser. Guys sign up to grow mustaches and then people vote on who they want to have a mustache. Every quarter toward someone's name is one more day they have to keep it before they can shave it off.

No one put any money on my name (not surprising, a military-standard mustache on me looks like a Chester 'Stache) but I'm gonna grow one all month long anyway. Although I didn't realize it was March already, so I'm a couple days behind. Not that it matters; I can grow a full thick beard in just a couple weeks if need be. :-D

At my last base (Osan), they did a fundraiser too, but it was different. You paid something like $5 to participate, then they took a before and after photo of your mustache hair and had the women of the squadron vote at the end of the month. There were 3 categories: Magnum P.I., Creepy, and Follically-Challenged. They created a new category for me - overall best mustache (since mine grew in thicker and darker than anyone else's) and gave me a $8 gift certificate to AAFES. w00t.

I forgot about mustache March, but luckily I didn't shave the stache the other day.

Same here, I'm the only Comm guy in this weather squadron that's willing to grow a 'stache.

Did you know the tradition of Mustache March started with (Ret.) Brigadier General Robin Olds? In Vietnam, he grew a fancy waxed handlebar mustache in defiance of the Air Force regulations. It was a hit with the younger Enlisted guys and always got a bit of a chuckle out of higher-ranking Officers. Lots of people grew mustaches in his honor. They called it a "bulletproof mustache" because he was never shot down, and in a few cases, he was the only pilot to return from missions.

When he returned from Vietnam, the Air Force Chief of Staff told him to get rid of his mustache, which he willingly obliged. But it's since turned into a tradition in the Air Force to grow a mustache in March as sort of a friendly protest against Air Force regulations.

I doubt you could get away with a handlebar mustache, though. I'd love to sport one of those!

It's not that I'm the only guy in my squadron growing a 'stache. I think I'm the only guy old enough to even grow facial hair. I work with a bunch of youngsters who could probably go a month without shaving and you would never know it. So I grow this 'stache proudly for my unit and as an example to all the youngsters out there! Mustach March will live on.

This is a great idea! I'd never heard of mustache March until this year. I knew about Robin Olds famous mustache (he's an awesome guy - saw something about him on History Channel). I'll pass this on to our Booster Club.

I've had a mustache since tech school. I shaved it off twice, and both times my kids howled with laughter. Said something about my nose being huge! I still have my "no-shave November" beard, although its days are numbered.

Ditto. Shaved it twice since I was in tech school. Never again. Gray or not, I'll keep it thank you very much, LOL.

The month is almost over. I can't wait to get rid of this hairy thing over my lip.

I have the thickest mustache in my squadron. I've had to trim it ever since the 2nd week just to keep it out of my mouth. Apparently, I suck at trimming the sides, though. I keep shaving it smaller and smaller while trying to balance it over my lip. Another week of this and I might accidentally find myself sporting the Hitler 'stache. Not a good look, considering I'm living in Germany. The locals are already giving me looks. 8O

2 more days... 2 more days...

Way too many child molester type looking people in my squadron, a few ended up shaving already simply because we were making those comments so much.

I've had 6 random guys come into my office and inspect my mustache today because rumors of it being a little crooked have spread through my unit. Holy crap people. :? Good thing I got up a little earlier today to fix it.

On a similar note, it seems the 86th Wing CC on Ramstein demanded a full open ranks inspection across his Wing on Monday because he was tired of correcting people whose mustaches were out of regs. He also said anyone in violation would get an instant LOC, along with their supervisor, flight CC, and squadron CC. This applies to TDY/leave personnel as well. He's pulling out the big guns; anyone under that Wing, I feel for ya.

Just need to make it through tomorrow, then it's gone for good.

Holy sh*t. I see that wing commander is going for the overkill there. He just flew past the nukes and went straight for the Low Orbiting Ion Cannons.

I know, someone should point out to him that Mustache March is meant as a friendly protest against the regs, not a full-on war against it. Just correct people and go on your way, dude.

When I met my future wife she mentioned she liked guys with mustaches so of course I grew one. I've shaved it off twice in 28 years. It is looking pretty gray now - if I start looking like the banker on monopoly i might lose it for good....

Even with a mustache my kids tell me my schnozz is huge!

I can see how some people can find it annoying but something like that should have been passed down to the SQ/CC's to handle.

How can he justify inspecting people that are on leave?

The worst part is that he e-mailed everyone on a Saturday about a Monday morning open ranks inspection, so I bet over 3/4 of all personnel didn't even know about it until they were already at work and unable to fix any violations.
